IpercusSonici

The transformative energy of the erupting volcano deeply permeates the incredible sound of the band born in 2002 in Catania, where ancient instruments such as jew’s harps, didjeridoo and drums fuse together to create explosive ultramodern sonorities through the sweat and emotion of four musicians with diverse backgrounds. After hundreds of concerts throughout Sicily and across Italy, Ipercussonici have carried around the world what was defined at Womad as “The new adventurous sound of Sicily”, securing for themselves a prominent place among the cult bands loved by both Sicilian and international audiences, performing at major festivals also in the Netherlands, France, Hungary, Portugal, England, Germany, Tunisia, Malta and even Japan. Always aligned in support of important civil, social and environmental causes, their single Mururoa was used in 2011 by Greenpeace to contribute to the referendum campaign against the return of nuclear power in Italy.

About Us

IpercusSonici were founded in Catania in 2002, and quickly succeeded in establishing strong roots among Sicilian audiences, thanks in part to their distinctive “Liotro Sound”, based on the unprecedented sonic impact of ancient instruments such as jew’s harps, didjeridoo and percussion, on Sicilian–African polyrhythmic research, and on dialect as a lingua franca for gripping songs which, while drawing heavily from Sicilian tradition, mix different genres: from rock to reggae, from drum’n’bass to techno. Since 2005, the year of release of their first self-produced CD “Liotro”, the band has frequently toured in Italy and abroad, performing at major festivals in the Netherlands, France, Hungary, Japan, and again in Germany, England, Portugal and Tunisia. In 2008 they released their CD “Tutti Pari” with Finisterre, presented live on Rai Radio 3 and broadcast by national radio stations, entering the playlist of “Caterpillar” on Radio2 for several weeks. The success achieved in England at Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival demonstrated their ability to engage diverse audiences: from Folk festivals to Reggae, Rock and World festivals, from underground clubs to large outdoor stages and public squares, without ever neglecting concerts in support of important civil, social and environmental causes. In 2011 their single “Mururoa” was used by Greenpeace to contribute to the referendum campaign against the return of nuclear power in Italy. In 2012, for the 20th anniversary of the Capaci massacre, their personal reworking of the song by Rosa Balistreri “Quannu Moru, Faciti ca nun Moru” became a video dedicated to all those who continue to live by fighting against the mafias.
